Perhaps you've never heard of the New Five Cents, Whistlestop or Flint Hill Special. Maybe you don't know a Dutch Oven from a Swede or Finnish oven. No matter, because there are still 20-30 reasons to attend this weekend's White Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Pinetop-Lakeside.Typical summer temperatures in the White Mountains are 20-30 degrees below that normally recorded in the Valley of the (Really Getting Tiresome) Sun. We know what you're saying: "Junior, pack the car because we just became bluegrass music's biggest fans."
The festival, which features a Dutch Oven Cookoff and an arts-and-crafts fair, runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday on the festival grounds of the Hon-Dah Resort Casino, making it very convenient to take a blackjack break. The casino is three miles outside Pinetop at the junction of Arizona 260 and 73. Admission is $10; free for children 12 and younger. Camping is available for $6 per day (no water hookup).
